Dreamy & Creamy

Whipped CreamThis is a simple tip on a healthy alternative for heavy whipping cream in your recipes.  If you have a recipe that calls for heavy cream and it is mostly for thickening the recipe, then you can use this simple low-cal, low-fat replacement.

1 c low-fat or fat-free milk

2T corn starch

1T flour

Wisk starch into milk first, then wisk in flour.  Pour into recipe.  When I use my Almond milk or lite soy milk, my entire recipe is thickened with only 2.5 g of fat and only 147 calories as opposed to 44 g of fat and 414 calories of heavy whipping cream.  For me, it’s a no-brainer.  Now you can really ENJOY your meal.  Come back to YFF and post a comment to let me know how this works for you.

Thanks for the tip! What can we replace whipped cream with on the pumpkin pie?

Great question Cindy. Actually, you don’t have to replace your whipped cream with anything. Whew! Aren’t you glad to hear that? Why, you may ask? Well, with only 20 calories and 1 gram of fat per serving (lite or non-fat variety), the effect that whipped cream would have on your weight is insignificant if you eat it in moderation. Remember: one of my weight management principles is Balance-Variety-Moderation. With that in mind, keep your whipped cream and enjoy it. However, maybe what you have under the whipped cream should be suspect. :-)

Best to steam or stir-fry cabbage with a little coconut oil or sesame seed oil instead of boiling. To add some color, add slices of red pepper or shredded carrots.
